Marquis Francesco de Pinedo, a colonel in the Italian Air Force, recognized the need for an airport or airfield on Flores for the first time when he was forced to make an emergency landing 200 kilometers from the island while en route to Newfoundland. The municipality of Santa Cruz das Flores is located in the northern portion of Flores Island in the Portuguese Azores archipelago.
